Coastal’s Valasek finishes in 19th-place tie at World Am

Peter Valasek, a sophomore on the 25th-ranked Coastal Carolina men’s golf team, tied for 19th in a field of 217 golfers with a 4-under par score of 210 (72-67-71) as he represented his native Slovakia at the 28th Annual World Amateur Team Championship, held Oct. 5-7.

Valasek, who missed a top 10 finish by just two strokes, led his three-man team to a tie for 27th finish with a three-round score of 2-over, 430 (144-141-145). Two years ago at the prestigious event, Valasek also led Slovakia as his team tied for 50th. The format has two of the nation’s best three scores count toward the team total.

Valasek’s score was counted each day as his teammates Martin Tavoda and Juraj Zvarik finished tied for 81st and tied for 107th, respectively. The United States won the 72-team event with a 24-under 404, five strokes better than runner-up Mexico. Mexico’s Sebastian Vazquez won individual medalist honors with a 15-under 199.

Valasek carded a 1-over par 72 in the opening round on the par 71 Antalya Golf Club course. Starting on the 10th hole, he posted one bogey and eight pars over his first nine holes. He moved to 2-over with a bogey on the par 4 first hole before getting a birdie on the par 4 fourth. He moved back to 2-over with a bogey on six but rallied to birdie the par five seventh hole and post pars on his final two holes for his 72.

In the second round, Valasek carded a 5-under par 67 on the par 72 Cornelia Golf Club course as only two other golfers had a better day, each shooting 66. He was standing at 3-under after eight holes before a bogey on the par 4 ninth hole. He would have no score above par on his final nine holes of the day as he reeled off four straight pars before finishing his second round with birdies on holes 14, 15 and 17.

In the final round, Valasek once again played the par 71 Antalya Golf Club, carding an even-par. He opened with a birdie and pars on 16 of his final 17 holes. The lone exception was a bogey on the par 5 16th, which resulted in his even-par 71.

The Coastal Carolina golf team will return to action Oct. 12-14 at East Tennessee State’s annual Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate.
