Coastal’s Wallace hurdles into NCAA quarterfinals

Day 3, 2016 Alan Connie Shamrock InvitationalCoastal Carolina was well-represented Friday afternoon in the NCAA East Preliminary Round at University of North Florida’s Hodges Stadium, with a diversified group of student-athletes competing both in track and field events.

Coveted trips to the NCAA Outdoor Championships were on the line, as the top 12 finishers in each event advance to the national meet, which is scheduled for June 8-11 in Eugene, Ore.

The second day of the NCAA East Preliminary Round included lightning-fast starts in the prelims of the 110m high hurdles both from Coastal Desmond Wallace and Kevondre’ Hunt, who finished fifth and 37th, respectively.

Wallace placed second in his heat and advanced to the quarterfinal round with a time of13.68, while Hunt crossed the finish line at 14.39. Wallace, who will compete Saturday at 7:20 p.m. in the quarterfinals, set a mark that matched his personal-best as well as the CCU school record.

Additionally, Coastal sophomore Robert Castellani kicked off the second day of competition with a strong showing in the javelin, placing ninth in his heat and 38th overall with a throw of 59.44m (195-0) . The Archbald, Pa., native, who ranks fifth all-time in the event at CCU (64.46m, 211-60), was making his NCAA debut.

Elsewhere, CCU redshirt freshman Devontaye Edwards had an impressive performance in the discus, finishing 14th in his heat and 40th overall with a throw of 49.75m (163-2). The Sumter, S.C., native, is CCU’s record-holder in the event.

The third day of the preliminary round opens with the men’s triple jump at 3 p.m. and concludes with the men’s 4x400m relay at 9:45 p.m.

Amirah Al-Bayyinah is scheduled to compete in the triple jump on Saturday at 6:30 p.m., and Coastal’s team of Therius Styles, Ryan McCain, Kahlim Denmark and Chiason Tenkiang is set for the 4x100m relay at 6:15 p.m. Lastly, Aynslee van Graan runs in the quarterfinals of the 1,500m on Saturday at 6:30 p.m.
