Cole, Henry lead Lady Chants to win over Western Carolina

Coastal Carolina, which got 16 points each from guards Angelica Henry and Shatia Cole, took an 18-point lead at the break and held on for a 66-56 win over Western Carolina Tuesday night at the Ramsey Activity Center.

The Chanticleers improve to 4-0, while the Catamounts drop to 3-2.

Henry, who had a career high, scored all 16 of her points in the first half and finished with two assists and five steals. Cole scored 10 of her 16 points in the second half, hitting a 3-pointer and five free throws.

“This is the best I’ve seen Angelica play,” said head coach Alan LeForce. “Some of that credit goes to Shatia, who pushes Angelica hard every day in practice and vice-versa.”

The game was tight through the first 16-and-a-half minutes with Coastal clinging to a 22-18 advantage. The Chants went on a 16-2 run to end the period to take a 38-20 advantage into the locker room. Henry, who was 7-of-10 at the free throw line, was the juggernaut of the run, scoring 11 points in the spurt. Courtney Grambley put the finishing touches on the run, hitting a 3-pointer from the top of the key as time expired in the first half.

“We harp on it in practice every day … pressure and run; pressure and run,” LeForce said, “We tell them you will eventually ware down your opponent and go on a run.”

In the second half, Western jumped out to a 14-6 run and held Coastal scoreless for over five minutes. The Chants got back on track, thanks to a high arching 3-pointer by Olivia Irick as the shot clock was winding down, and Western went on a three-minute scoring draught of its own as CCU led 63-45 with 2:37 left in the game. Western was able to trim its deficit to nine, 65-56, before Irick hit 1-of-2 from the charity stripe with 11 seconds left to provide the final score.

“We lost our focus in the second half,” LeForce said. “Overall, I am pleased because, for the most part, we were able to shut them down. When we are hitting on all cylinders, our defense is pretty good. It was good to go on the road and get our first road win. This, and shooting as well as we did, should give us a lot of confidence.

While the majority of the first half was close, Western Carolina scored the first two points of the game before Maddox hit a layup and Henry drained a free throw. From that point, Coastal never trailed, or was tied, the remainder of the contest.

Maddox led Coastal with eight rebounds as the Chants out-rebounded Western 33-25. Kira Carter added nine points and rebounds.

Western Carolina was led by Rena Wakama and Kaila’Shea Menendez with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Coastal Carolina will remain of the road, traveling to Jacksonville, Fla., to face North Florida on Nov. 28. Tipoff is set for 7 pm.
