Braves reach LS semifinals as lone local team still alive

The Socastee High wrestling team advanced to the Lower State semifinals with a 40-36 victory over Hilton Head in Saturday’s Class 3A Lower State Duals at the Brave Wave.

Following Kyle Burton’s win by pin in the 200-pound weight class, No. 5-ranked Socastee took command against No. 15 Hilton Head in the lower weight classes, winning five straight matches – Justin Knipper (106) by forfeit, Jordan Hodge (113) and female wrestler Quin Gammon (120) by pins, Mikel Nelson (126) by major decision and Koy Mai (132) by 3-0 decision as the Braves all but put the Seahawks away.

Hilton Head snapped the streak at 138, but Socastee’s John Leggett (145) earned a major decision and Tommy Lazaroff (160) won by pin to clinch the match, allowing the Braves to forfeit the remaining weight classes to preserve health and conserve energy for Monday’s semifinal match.Socastee will host Berkeley, which defeated Hartsville on Saturday.

No. 9-ranked Myrtle Beach’s season came to an end in the second round after the second-seeded Seahawks defeated third-seeded Darlington in the first round but lost to top-seeded Hanahan in the second round by a 48-24 score.
No. 10 North Myrtle Beach also reached the second round after winning by forfeit over Marlboro County. but the third-seeded Chiefs were eliminated No. 19 Swansea in the quarterfinals. Fourth-seeded St. James was knocked out in the first round by host Hartsville.

In Class 4A action, top-seeded Conway drew a first-round bye but lost in the second round to No. 9-ranked Beaufort, 57-19. Second-seeded Carolina Forest traveled to Wando and suffered a first-round defeat to White Knoll.

Although five of the Grand Strand’s six schools were eliminated from the team tournament, all have several wrestlers qualified for the state individual tournament on Feb. 15.
