Conway QB Grainger puts end to recruiting process

Conway High quarterback D’Wuan Grainger entered his senior season as an unknown. Four months later, the word is out.

Grainger closed the final chapter in his high school career Monday by verbally committing to Furman University in Greenville. The 6-foot-5, 185-pound duel threat QB plans to make it official in February by signing with the Paladins.

Grainger announced his decision via Twitter in a prepared statement, saying in part: “The recruiting process has been a roller coaster, but I believe it is time to make my decision. After talking it out with my family, I’ve decided that I will be verbally committing to Furman University.”

Grainger’s whirlwind recruiting phase came after he patiently waited behind three-year starter Peyton Derrick, who was a freshman at Appalachian State this fall.

Derrick’s successor quickly answered any questions about his talents and leadership, helping the Tigers to a 10-2 record and their first Region 6-5A championship before falling short in the second round of the playoffs.

Grainger passed for 2,125 yards and 18 touchdowns while rushing for 641 yards and 4 TDs. He completed 53.6 percent of his passes and threw only seven interceptions.

Grainger was being recruited by Eastern Kentucky, Georgia State, Hampton, South Carolina State, Newberry, The Citadel and others.
