Conway storms past South Brunswick in Kickoff Clash

confoot-21The once-proud Conway High football program ran into tough times in recent years, posting back-to-back two-win seasons. On Thursday night, they looked like the Tigers of old in a 55-0 victory over South Brunswick, matching their last two victory totals in August.

Playing at Doug Shaw Stadium in the opener of the Derrick Law Firm Carolina Kickoff Clash, Conway made itself right at home from the opening kickoff. The Tigers (2-0) led 27-0 at the end of the first quarter and called off the dogs midway through the second en route to a 33-0 halftime lead.

Following a three-and-out stop on South Brunswick’s opening series, Conway’s Bryan Edwards returned a punt deep into enemy territory and Jah’Maine Martin ran it in from 35 yards out on the first snap. Martin finished with three touchdowns on only six carries and Edwards had one TD on a 100-yard night.

Following a Deandre Huggins interception, Edwards set up another Martin TD with a deep run. Darren Stanley caught a 40-yard TD pass from Peyton Derrick to make it 20-0 and Martin completed the hat trick on a 14-yard run to close the opening period. Edwards’ 30-yard TD grab led to mass substitutions and a 33-0 edge.

Conway emptied the bench in the second half, scoring only on the first drive. Sophomore Daiquawn Clark did the honors from 1 yard out and the fourth quarter looked more like a JV scrimmage. The defense forced a safety and Stanley scored his second and Conway’s final TD of the night by returning the free kick 50 yards. Tyreke Weaver scored on a 5-yard run to cap the scoring.

The win gave South Carolina an early 1-0 lead in the Kickoff Clash, which features five games over three nights involving teams from opposite sides of the state border. Socastee plays New Hanover on Friday, followed by a triple header Saturday of North Brunswick vs, Marlboro County (noon), Southeast Raleigh vs. South Florence (5:15 p.m.) and Charlotte Christian vs. Myrtle Beach (8 p.m.). The Tigers host Socastee next Friday.
