Conway shoots the lights out in win over Socastee

The Conway and Socastee High football teams literally shot the lights out Friday night as the Tigers claimed a 50-28 victory following a fourth-quarter power outage at The Reservation.

The two teams combined for 57 points and more than 500 yards of total offense in the first half alone as the Tigers erupted for a 37-20 halftime lead. Shortly after the Tigers hit the half-a-hundred mark early in the fourth period on an apparent game-clinching touchdown run by Antonio Long, the lights went out midway through the final quarter.

The Tigers (6-1 overall, 2-0 Region 6-5A) came out swinging in all phases as defense end Tonka Hemingway swatted a Hunter Illing pass to teammate Tim Shelton in the end zone for an easy pick-six. Rakim Bellamy added a 1-yard TD dive as Conway jumped out to a quick 14-0 lead. But the Braves (4-3, 0-2) had some firepower of their own as Illing connected on the first of several long passes against the Tigers secondary, this one a 69-yard bomb to Devin Stamp to cut the deficit in half.

Conway quarterback D’Wuan Grainger used his dual-threat skills to frustrate the Braves, rushing for a pair of scores and hitting Juwon Moody for an 80-yard TD strike. Illing, who endured heavy pressure from the blitzing Tigers, answered with a long TD pass to Edward Tucker, and Deshaun Myers’ 15-yard TD run pulled Socastee to within 34-20, the closest they would get the rest of the way. Conway’s Will Smith kicked a 31-yarder before the half to make it 37-20.

The offenses slowed down a bit in the second half until Moody caught his second TD pass from Grainger – a 50-yarder that made it 43-20. Illing’s 13-yard TD run cut it to 43-28, but Long’s run and the power outage ended any hopes Socastee had at a comeback. Following about 30 minutes of flickering, the game ended under partial lighting and a departing crowd.

Conway plays host to South Florence next week looking to stay unbeaten in region play. Socastee travels to West Florence on Thursday.
