Conway’s Moody, Green top local Shrine Bowl pick list

The Grand Strand will be well represented in the 76th annual Shrine Bowl with four local seniors making the North Carolina vs. South Carolina all-star game.

Conway High quarterback Mykal Moody and wide receiver/defensive back Malcolm Green give the Tigers two skill positions on the all-star squad, and Carolina Forest running back Harold Atkinson adds another top offensive threat to the Sandlappers’ lineup.

Defensive standout Chocolate Wilson is Myrtle Beach’s lone representative despite missing the current season due to injury. The highly recruited athlete is expected to return to the Seahawks’ lineup before the end of the regular season.

Moody is regarded as one of the top duel-threat quarterbacks in the Carolinas and he is backing it up again this season. He has passed for 1,226 yards and 14 touchdowns and rushed for 637 yards and 11 TDs.

Six of those touchdown passes have gone to Greene, who leads the Grand Strand and Pee Dee regions in receiving yardage with 36 catches for 575 yards and six scores.

Atkinson has 112 carries for 634 yards and eight touchdowns, but the emergence of quarterback Will Brunson and the passing game, along with Atkinson moving over to linebacker to help a struggling defense, has cut into his productivity this season.

Wilson has yet to play a down for Myrtle Beach with an ankle injury but is close to returning to the lineup. He made the team based on his productivity in past seasons as a linebacker and team leader for the Seahawks, and his recruitment by several major college programs.

The Shrine Bowl will be held Dec. 15 at Wofford College in Spartanburg. To see the entire roster, visit www.shrine-bowl.com.
