Conway’s status in limbo as Goose Creek files injunction

Conway’s roller-coaster week of being out of and then back in the Class 4A, Division II football playoffs took another unexpected turn Thursday.

After the SCHSL’s executive committee voted Wednesday to uphold its disqualification of Goose Creek, which eliminated the Tigers last Friday, the top-seeded Gators held a press conference Thursday to announce their plans to take legal action against the SCHSL.

Goose Creek has filed for an injunction in state court to prevent Conway from taking its place in Friday night’s second-round playoff game against Bluffton (11-1). The court will hear arguments at 9 a.m. Friday to decide whether the Gators’ case warrants legal intervention.

The standoff leaves all three teams in limbo – Goose Creek doesn’t know if it can make a run at a repeat state title, Bluffton doesn’t know who its opponent will be, and Conway has gone from turning in equipment Monday, re-issuing gear Tuesday and practicing the rest of the week without knowing if it is necessary.

The No. 16-seeded Tigers (6-6) suffered a 48-7 loss to the No. 1-ranked Gators last Friday, but got new life from the SCHSL ruling. However, the Tigers will have to wait for word before making the 4-hour bus trip to Bluffton.

According to media reports, Goose Creek self-reported a violation about using an ineligible player, who was not identified by name. The fifth-year high school student has attended seven different schools and played basketball as a freshman at another school. The Gators contend the player did not help them win any games.

A judge is expected to rule on the injunction request Friday but the game could be postponed. Additional time could help the Tigers if the extra rest allows star quarterback Mykal Moody to return to the lineup. The senior missed Conway’s final two games due to a thigh bruise but may be able to play Friday pending the ruling.
