Cougars make most of five hits to down No. 21 Chants

ccubase-cofcThe College of Charleston only had five hits, but two were two-run doubles to give the Cougars a 4-2 win Tuesday evening over #21 Coastal Carolina at Patriots Point.

The Chanticleers (13-9) out-hit CofC (14-7), 10-5, and had the bases loaded in the eighth, but could not capitalize in getting the loss.

Three of the Cougars’ five hits came in the first inning as they took a 2-0 lead. With one out, Tommy Richter doubled and Morgan Phillips singled. Bradley Jones brought the pair home with a two-run double to deep left center field.

Coastal got on the scoreboard with a run in the sixth to make the score 2-1. Conner Owings reached on with a one-out single and Zach Remillard followed with an infield single. A throwing error on the play moved Owings to third and Remillard to second. G.K. Young then plated Owings with a sacrifice fly to right field.

The College took advantage of a CCU error to score two runs in the seventh. Connor Grant reached on a fielder’s choice and his pinch runner, Bradley Dixons was safe at second thanks to a CCU error on a ground ball to put runners on first and second. Clay Hunt delivered a two-run double to right field to give the Cougars a 4-1 cushion.

Coastal answered with a run in the top of the eighth to make the score 4-2. Billy Cooke and Owings started the frame with singles. With one out, Young came through with his second RBI of the game with a single up the middle to score Cooke. Coastal would go on to load the bases with two outs, but C of C pitcher Will Detwiler got an inning-ending ground ball to limit the damage.

Carter Love record his sixth save by working a 1-2-3 inning in the ninth to close out the win for the Cougars. Eric Bauer (2-0) earned the win. He pitched five scoreless and scattered five hits with no walks and six strikeouts.

Zach Hopeck (0-1) suffered the loss. He allowed four hits and two runs in five innings’ work with no walks and two strikeouts.

Coastal Carolina will return home to host Stetson in a three-game series – Thursday at 6 pm, Friday at 6 pm and Saturday at 1 pm.
