Myrtle Beach falls to O-W in CresCom Bank tournament

crescom2Orangeburg-Wilkerson defeated Myrtle Beach 59-33 to advance to the semifinal round of the consolation bracket of the 2014 CresCom Bank Holiday Invitational.

The Lady Bruins (10-1) used a pressure defense to force 21 Myrtle Beach (6-2) turnovers in the opening half.  Orangeburg-Wilkerson turned those miscues into a 16-0 points off of turnovers advantage that led to a 35-10 cushion for the Lady Bruins at halftime.

Orangeburg-Wilkerson was led by Tchenavia Jackson and Dejoria Howard’s 14 points each.  Brandi Rivers came off of the bench to chip in 12 points and eight rebounds for the Lady Bruins.

Myrtle Beach, which ended the game with 33 turnovers, was paced by Jalah Horton and Kiana Adderton with eight points each.  Adderton also added 11 rebounds.

* Riverside (NC)  47, Daniel 46: Sunterea Highsmith’s layup with four seconds to play gave Riverside (NC) a 47-46 victory over Daniel (SC) to advance to the semifinal round of the consolation bracket.

Riverside was led by Takwana Bland’s 15 points, while Kayla Jones posted a double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds for the Knights.  Daniel (1-5; Central, SC) was paced by Adria Oliver’s 11 points and 10 rebounds.

* Christ Church 76, Floyd (VA) County 65: Shayla Bennett poured in 36 points to lead Christ Church (SC) to a 76-65 opening round victory on Thursday night.

After trailing 37-29 at halftime, Christ Church (6-0; Greenville, SC) outscored Floyd County (5-1) 47-28 in the second 16-minute period.  The Cavaliers chipped away at the lead and finally overtook Floyd County on a free throw by Paula Pieper that gave Christ Church a 55-54 lead with 6:36 to play.  That free throw came as part of a 8-0 run that opened a 62-54 cushion with 4:57 on the clock.

* Riverdale (TN) 63, South Forsyth (GA) 59: Riverdale (TN) scored a come-from-behind victory over South Forsyth (GA) in Thursday’s first-round action.

Trailing by 13 at 42-29 with 13:31 to play in the second half, Riverdale turned up the defensive pressure during a 21-7 run that would give the Lady Warriors the lead at 50-49 with 7:05 to play.  During the run, Riverside (10-1; Murfreesboro, TN) connected on 6-of-9 from the field and 9-of-10 from the free throw line while forcing South Forsyth (9-1; Cummings, GA) into six turnovers and just 3-of-9 from the field.

* Archbishop John Carroll (PA) 49, Marietta (GA) 35: Archbishop John Carroll (3-2; Radnor, PA) trailed for less than 30 seconds early in the first half and led by as many as 16 in cruising to the victory.

Day 1

* Miami (FL)60, Myrtle Beach 43:   Beatrice Mompremeir put on a show with game-high in points and rebounds. She posted a double-double of 23 points and 17 boards in the 60-43 win.

Myrtle Beach was led by Kyerra Adderton with 12 points. Kiana Adderton and Jalah Horton added nine points apiece.

* Shelbyville (TN) Central 41, Orangeburg-Wilkinson 37: The Eaglettes (7-3) dealt the Lady Bruins (9-1) their first loss of the season.

Dejoria Howard missed a jumper with 10 seconds remaining for the Bruins and To’Nesha Allison sealed the victory for Shelbyville Central with a pair of free throws with just six seconds remaining.  The Eaglettes connected on 6-of-8 from the free throw line in the final two minutes to hold off Orangeburg-Wilkinson.

Felts led a balanced Shelbyville Central attack with 12 points while Allison added 11 points and six steals.  Orangeburg-Wilkinson was paced by Tchenavia Jackson’s 10 points.  Georgia Tech signee Dejoria Howard struggled from the field as she connected on just 4-of-11 shots for a season-low eight points.

* Parkersburg (WV) South 76, Riverside (NC) 57: Parkereburg (3-0) forced Riverside (3-2; Williamston, NC) into 25 turnovers and held a 37-0 advantage in scoring off of the bench in route to the easy win.  The Patriots built leads as large as 19 points in the opening half and 26 in the second half in the lopsided win.

Keya Bartlett led Parkersburg South with a game-high 28 points.  Anna Hayton came off of the bench to post a double-double for the Patriots with 22 points and 12 rebounds.

* Fayette County (GA) 63, Danel 50: Fayette County (5-2) opened with  a 13-2 run and cruised to victory. Kayla SSmith scored a game-high 32 points to lead Fayette County.  Shanterie Cobb paced Daniel with 16 points and eight rebounds.
