Dear at nationals after CAC makes big splash at state

The Coastal Athletic Club’s Adam Dear is spending the week in Irvine, CA, where he qualified to compete in this week’s USA Swimming Junior Nationals.

The 17-year-old Waccamaw High graduate, where he was a two-time state champion. He qualified for Summer Juniors at the South Carolina Long Course State Championships held July 25-28 at the University of South Carolina. Dear won first place in both the 100 Meter Butterfly and 200 Meter Butterfly.  He placed second in the 100 Meter Freestyle and third in the 50 Meter Freestyle.

“Adam is a very exciting swimmer to coach,” said CAC director Coach Fabio Silva, “He is currently ranked 10th in the nation in the 100 Fly for his age.  Irvine will give him the opportunity to be in a very fast environment. I think he is ready and I’m excited at his prospects.”

Dear, who will swim for East Carolina University in the fall, will compete in the 100 and 200 Butterfly as well as the 50 Free in this week’s Summer Juniors.

Although Dear was the only CAC swimmer to go to California, several teammates also had strong showings at last week’s state meet. The CAC had 23 swimmers participating at the 2013 South Carolina Long Course State Championships. Collectively, CAC swimmers improved their personal best times in 73 out of 119 events and broke 14 team records and they earned 47 Top 20 finishes.

“I am really proud of my swimmers and their performances,” Silva said. “All of their hard work is paying off.  Now, we rest for a few days while our older swimmers shift their focus to the high school swim season.”

Here are the top results from CAC swimmers:

* Adam Dear – 1st place (100 meter butterfly), 1st place (200 meter butterfly), 2nd place (100 meter freestyle), 3rd place (50 meter freestyle).

* Jordyn O’Dell – 3rd place (100 meter backstroke).

* Maggie Langdale – Broke 4 team records during the meet.

* Casey Mitchell – Top 10 finishes in 4 events (50 meter backstroke, 100 meter backstroke, 200 meter backstroke, and 1,500 meter freestyle).

* Brae Jackson – Top 10 in 200 meter backstroke.

* Luke La Rochelle – Top 10 in 50 meter freestyle.
