Carolina Forest’s defense leads win over St. James

cffoot-bealeDefense used to be a four-letter word at Carolina Forest. On Friday night, it was two of them – darn good.

The Panthers (2-1) held the St. James offense out of the end zone and made two huge fourth-down stops late in the game to give Carolina Forest a 28-10 victory over the visiting Sharks (1-2).

Led by linebacker Ryan Perin’s 13 tackles and three sacks, the defense limited the Sharks to 200 total yards of offense and kept the Panthers in it while star running back Dyverse Simmons set out a partial-game suspension. St. James took a 3-0 lead on a 47-yard field goal by Charles Ouverson, but Carolina Forest quarterback Matt Beale scored on a 4-yard run for a 7-3 halftime lead.

With Simmons getting untracked, Beale capped a long TD drive with a 1-yard TD dive and a 14-3 lead. The Sharks seemed on the ropes until Alijah Pursley recovered a Panther fumble and took it 10 yards to the house to cut the deficit to 14-10.

St. James had several shots to take the lead or cut the deficit, but Carolina Forest’s defense stood strong. The special teams blocked a field goal attempt by Ouverson, and the defense held on four downs to set up Beale’s 40-yard TD pass to Jason Craft to make it 21-10.

The Sharks drove to the Carolina Forest 6 but the defense held them out of the end zone. Simmons put the finishing touches on St. James by rambling 57 yards to paydirt, clinching the win for the Panthers.

Carolina Forest hosts North Myrtle Beach next week, while the Sharks have a bye week.
