Deglan goes deep twice as Pelicans split doubleheader

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans (63-42, 23-13) split a doubleheader Tuesday with the Winston-Salem Dash at TicketReturn.com Field.

The Pelicans beat the Dash 5-4 in the opener before falling 5-2 in the second tilt, setting up a rubber match Wednesday. The announced crowd of 5,021 included the fourth largest walk-up crowd in franchise history.

Kellin Deglan tallied four hits on the evening, including two home runs in the first game. Luis Sardinas had three hits in the second game and five total on the night.

With the Pelicans trailing 4-3 in the sixth inning of the first game, Deglan drilled his second two-run home run of the game, giving the Pelicans a lead they would not surrender. It was the first multi home run game of the season by a Pelican, bringing his team-leading total to 11. He capped a three-run first inning rally with his first long ball.

The Dash would scored four straight runs and take the lead in the sixth inning on an RBI single from Courtney Hawkins off Francisco Mendoza. The Dash threatened to score a second run on the play but Jake Skole threw out Kevan Smith at the plate.

After Deglan’s home run, Mendoza (3-2) got the final three outs and earned his third win of the season. Jake Cose (3-4) took the loss, allowing five earned runs on six hits over six innings. Alec Asher started game one and was charged with four earned runs over 5.1 innings of work.

The Dash scored three runs in the first inning of game two, taking the early lead on Taylor Dennis. Dennis (1-2) took the loss, allowing three earned runs on four hits over three innings.

The Birds got two runs in the fourth inning to make it a one-run game. Drew Robinson hit an RBI triple and Trever Adams had an RBI groudout. Joey DeMichele hit a two-run home run in the seventh inning to push the Dash’s lead back to three.

The Pelicans and Dash play the rubber match Wednesday at Pelicans Ballpark. Right-hander Nick Martinez (9-6, 2.96) will be opposed by righty Myles Jaye (6-5, 4.71). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
