Dorn claims Hackler title; CCU slips to eighth place

ccugolf-dornCoastal Carolina junior Andrew Dorn became the first Chanticleer to win individual medalist honors at the program’s own General Hackler Championship, tying with Kent State’s Corey Conners for the honor.

This is Dorn’s first collegiate win but his third of the calendar year as he won the prestigious North & South Amateur and Ohio Amateur this past summer.

Both Dorn (73-71-72=216) and Conners (75-69-72=216) were tied for second entering the final round Tuesday and both carded a final round 72 to shot an even-par 216 for the event in passing day one leader Rhys Pugh of East Tennessee State, who turned in a final round 75 Tuesday.

In the previous 12 Hackler Championships, Coastal has had six top five finishes, including Rafael Vera (3rd in 2002), Dustin Johnson (2nd in 2005), Zack Byrd (4th in 2007 and 2ndin 2009), Dan Obremski (3rdin 2010) and Sebastian Soderberg (5th in 2013).

Middle Tennessee State won the team title with a 54-hole score of 884, edging #23 Kent State by two strokes. Coastal Carolina placed 8th in the 12-team field with a score of 905 (295-307-303).

Dorn, who led the field with 14 birdies over three rounds, started the day with a triple bogey on the par 4, 4th hole before posting a bogey and a birdie on holes six and seven, respectively. The junior finished his round with three birdies and 11 pars.

Freshman Olle Widegren tied for 26th with a 54-hole score of 74-77-78=229 and Ben Wheeler tied for 38th (74-76-82=232). Roberto Ballesteros turned in a final-round 77 and tied for 46th (74-84-77=235) while Peter Valasek carded a 76 in the final rounds to for 52nd (78-83-76=237).

Alfredo Ruiz, playing as an individual, led all Coastal golfers and ranked ninth in the field with 34 pars for the event. The freshman tied for 54th (81-78-79=238) with classmate Chris Williams finishing one stroke behind and placing 56th (76-82-81=239). Josh Pisarri (83-81-79=243) finished in 60th.

Coastal Carolina will immediately hit the road to play in the annual Seminole Intercollegiate (March 14-16).
