Dorn leads Chants to sixth after first round of Hackler

ccugolf-dorn3Chanticleer junior Andrew Dorn carded 73-71 (144) and is tied for second, one stroke behind the leader, at the General Hackler Championship.

As a team, Coastal Carolina led by one stroke after the first round, but dropped to sixth in the afternoon, shooting 602 (295-307) over 36 holes at the event, played at the par 72, 6,950-yard TPC of Myrtle Beach.

Kent State, ranked 23rd in the nation, was in eighth place after a morning round 305 before shooting a 1-under par 287 in the afternoon to lead the 12-team field with a two-round score of 592 (305-287). East Carolina and Middle Tennessee are tied for second, each posting a 17-over par score of 593, followed by East Tennessee State (595), Iowa State (597) and Coastal Carolina.

Dorn and teammate Ben Wheeler ranked 1-2 in the field with 10 and eight birdies, respectively, on the day.

Dorn only had two pars in his first 10 holes, but turned in six birdies and two bogeys over the span to get to 4-under at one point. He was 5-over par for his final eight holes to settle for his 1-over 73. In the afternoon, Dorn was much more consistent, posting 11 pars, four birdies and three bogeys for a 1-under 71.

Wheeler, who was tied for eighth after an opening-round 74, dropped into a tie for 18th after posting a 4-over 76 in the afternoon. He had three of his eight birdies in the first round, getting five in the second, but trouble on holes three, nine and 14 led to his 36-hole score of 150.

Olle Widegren was also tied for eighth after 18 holes Monday, before carding a 77 in the afternoon. In round one, Widegren had13 pars and offset two bogeys with two birdies. However, a double bogey on the 14th hole led to his 2-over round of 74.

Coastal’s fivesome was rounded out by Roberto Ballesteros, who is tied for 47th with rounds of 74-84 for a 158, and Peter Valasek, who os tied for 55th with rounds of 78-83 for a 161.

Playing as individuals, Chris Williams is tied for 47th (76-82=158), Alfredo Ruiz is tied for 51st (81-78=159) and Josh Pisarri is tied for 59th (83-81=164).

The General Hackler will conclude with 18 final holes on Tuesday.
