Dorn, Wheeler see Coastal careers come to a close

ccugolf-dorn2Ben Wheeler and Andrew Dorn, two of Coastal Carolina’s more decorated players, closed their impressive careers at the 2015 NCAA Chapel Hill Regional Saturday at UNC’s Finley Golf Course (par 72, 7,242 yards).

Wheeler shot a final round, even par 72 to move up five spots into a tie for 49th. Overall, CCU graduate tallied a 54-hole score of 221 (74-75-72). Dorn, also a CCU graduate, tied for 63rd with a three-round score of 226 (70-76-80).

Both Wheeler and Dorn played in three NCAA Regionals and helped the Chanticleers advance to the NCAA Championship in 2013.

Wheeler ends his career fifth on the CCU all-time scoring list (73.58), trailing only Dustin Johnson, Alvero Velasco, Sebastian Soderberg and Zack Byrd. His 72.43 scoring average this season ranks sixth on the school’s single-season list with Dustin Johnson (three times), Zack Byrd and Sebastian Soderberg having better seasons. Wheeler finished his career with six career top-5 finishes, 12 top-10 finishes and 19 top-20 finishes. He had 16 rounds in the 60’s and 43 rounds of par of better.

Wheeler won the 2014 Big South Championship, was a two-time All-Big South selection and two-time Academic All-Big South honoree. He additionally earned the 2102 Big South Freshman of the Year honor. At the 2013 NCAA Championship, Wheeler shot a 1-under par 209 to tie for 26th.

Dorn finished his career ninth on the CCU all-time scoring list (73.93) and his 72.90 scoring average this season ranks 15th on the school’s single-season list. Dorn was medalist twice in his career, including the only Chant to win CCU’s own General Hackler Championship. Overall, he had five top-5’s, 13 top-10’s and 17 top 20’s. Dorn shot 13 rounds in the 60’s and had 43 rounds of par or better.
