Duran makes All-American; Three Chants on watch list

Coastal Carolina sixth-year senior tight end David Duran has been named to the 2012 The Sports Network FCS Preseason All-America third team.

He also joins teammates quarterback Aramis Hillary, linebacker Andrae Jacobs and punt returner Niccolo Mastromatteo on the College Football Performance Awards “Watch Lists” for their respective positions.

Duran, a third team preseason All-American by The Sports Network in 2011, returns after suffering a season-ending injury this past fall. The two-time, first team All-Big South selection and 2010 All-American played parts of only four games in 2011, catching five passes for 75 yards.

Duran ranks seventh on the CCU career receptions list with 58, while ranking sixth on the school’s all-time pass receiving yards list (820). Also, Duran is only two receptions shy of becoming the first tight end in Big South history with 60 career catches. Duran is joined on the “Tight End Watch List” by 2012 opponents Matt Lengel (Eastern Kentucky) and Mario Thompson (VMI).

Hillary, who graduated from Coastal Carolina in May, is back for his senior season after ranking 12th in the NCAA and setting a CCU single-season record in pass completion percentage (65.5). Hillary also ranked second in the Big South in total offense last season, averaging 183.36 yards per game.

In addition to ranking third in the league with 14 passing touchdowns, with only five interceptions, Hillary rushed for seven scores to rank seventh in the league. He is on the “Quarterback Watch List” with 2012 opponents Jamal Jackson (Appalachian State), T.J. Pryor (Eastern Kentucky) and Kyle Essington (Stony Brook).

Jacobs is a two-time, first team All-Big South pick as well as the league’s 2010 Defensive Player of the Year. The senior battled injuries throughout the 2011 season but still ranked fourth on the team with 46 tackles, while tallying a team-high 10 tackles for losses.

Jacobs ranks fourth on the CCU all-time list for tackles for loss with 24.5. If he matches his 2011 total of 10 TFL, he will set the CCU career mark. He is joined on the “Linebacker Watch List” with 2012 opponents Jeremy Kimbrough (Appalachian State), Anthony Brown (Eastern Kentucky) and Mitch McGrath (Furman).

Mastromatteo is a two-time All-Big South pick and enters his junior season as the Big South and Coastal Carolina all-time leader in punt returns (47) as well as the CCU all-time leader in punt return yards (379). Mastromatteo also ranks second on CCU’s career lists for kickoff returns (47) and kickoff return yards (995).

Coastal Carolina opens the 2012 football season on Aug. 1, hosting North Carolina A&T. The Chants will also host 2011 NCAA playoff team Eastern Kentucky (Aug. 15 for Family Weekend), 2011 NCAA playoff team Stony Brook (Oct. 13 for Hall of Fame Weekend), Liberty (Oct. 27 for Homecoming) and Charleston Southern (Nov. 17 for Senior Day).
