Ex-Pelican Furcal returns for Fan Appreciation Day

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans will welcome back alumnus and former Atlanta Braves infielder Rafael Furcal for the club’s Fan Appreciation Day on Sunday, Aug. 27 at TicketReturn.Com Field at Pelicans Ballpark.

Furcal’s No. 2 is the only former player number to be retired by the Pelicans in club history. Furcal was the first former Pelican to make the major leagues, starting at shortstop for the Atlanta Braves in 2000.

Furcal played in 43 games with the Pelicans in their 1999 inaugural season, batting .293/.343/.375 with 15 stolen bases to help Myrtle Beach win a share of the Mills Cup Championship. He made his Major League debut the very next season, earning National League Rookie of the Year honors by hitting .295/.394/.382 with 40 stolen bases.

A native of Loma de Cabrera in the Dominican Republic, Furcal played 14 seasons in the Major Leagues for the Braves, Los Angeles Dodgers, St. Louis Cardinals and Miami Marlins. In addition to his 2000 Rookie of the Year award, he was a three-time All-Star and received Most Valuable Player award votes in two separate seasons. Furcal finished his career with 1,817 hits and 314 stolen bases.

The Pelicans will open gates for all fans beginning at 2 p.m. for the 3:05 p.m. game. Furcal will be at the Pelicans’ photobooth, located on the main concourse behind home plate, from 2:00-2:45 p.m. and 3:15-4:00 p.m. to take pictures with fans. Fans wishing for a VIP experience can purchase a special suite ticket that includes a meet-and-greet with Furcal, food and beverages for just $50.

In addition to the Furcal appearance, Fan Appreciation Day will also include a Dr. Pepper Bag and Mystery Envelope Giveaway to the first 1,000 fans, free inflatable access and SuperHero character appearances from 2:00-4:00 p.m. Tickets are available on www.MyrtleBeachPelicans.com/Tickets and at the Pelicans’ Box Office at (843) 918-6000.
