First-place Dorn has Chants in hunt at Hootie tournament

ccugolf-dornopenCoastal Carolina had three players shoot under par, including 18-hole co-leader Andrew Dorn, and the Chanticleers posted a season-best round of 5-under par 282 to stand in third place in the 15-team, Hootie @ Bulls Bay Intercollegiate, played at the par 72, 7.363-yard Bulls Bay Golf Club.

Missouri is in first after round one with a score of 11-under par 277. Host and fifth-ranked South Carolina is second, posting an 8-under 280. The third-place Chants lead and impressive group that are in places four-eight, including #29 New Mexico (284), #10 Auburn (285), #50 Duke (286), #22 Virginia (286) and #24 Wake Forest (287), while #41 North Carolina State is tied for 11th (295).

Dorn, who is in a four-way tie for first, tied a career best by posting a bogey-free, 5-under par 67. The senior started with birdies on holes 10 and 11 before reeling off seven pars to finish his front nine at 2-under. Dorn birdied the par 4 1st hole and, three holes later, had an eagle on the par 5 4th hole. He had pars on his final five holes for his 67. Dorn’s only other round of 67 came in the final round of the 2014 NCAA Regional.

Ben Wheeler is tied for seventh after carding a 3-under par 69. The senior got off to a sluggish start as he was 2-over par after his first five holes. However, Wheeler had birdies on holes 15 and 16 and made the turn at even par. He posted birdies on holes 3 and 4 before finishing his round with a birdie on the par 4 9th hole for his 69.

Ollie Widegren is tied for 15th with a season-best round of 1-under par, 71. The sophomore began his round with five pars. However, he had bogeys on three of his last four holes on his front nine. Widegren rallied with birdies on holes 2, 4 and 6 then, like Wheeler, finished his round with a birdie on the par 4 9th hole.

Ryan Carpenter (75) and Alfredo Ruiz (77) are tied for 52nd and 57th, respectively, to round out Coastal’s contingent.
