Five Lady Chants score in double digits to down UNCA

Junior guard Angelica Henry scored 19 points to lead five Coastal Carolina players in double figures and the Chanticleers pulled away in the final five minutes for a 73-62 win over UNC Asheville in a Big South women’s basketball contest Saturday at the HTC Center.

The win snapped a five-game losing skid for the Chanticleers and improved their record to 8-12 and 3-7 in the conference. UNC Asheville fell to 2-18, 0-9.

Also in double figures for Coastal were AJ Jordan with 14, Katelyn Connor with 13, Alexx Puckett with 12 and Shatia Cole with 10. Jordan had six of her points in the final four minutes when Coastal broke a 59-59 tie and outscored Asheville 14-3 the rest of the way. The Chanticleers hit all eight of their free throws in that span. The Chanticleers also had four players with 7 rebounds apiece.

UNC Asheville was led by Paige Love with 18 points and Gentry Manley, who had 14 points and 12 rebounds. Kelli Riles joined Love and Manley in double digits with a 12 point, eight rebound effort.

Henry had 13 of her points in the first half when Coastal used a late 15-4 surge to take a 37-31 lead at the half. Trailing 22-17 with 7:02 remaining in the first half, Henry picked the pocket of a Bulldog and raced down the court before spotting up and draining a jumper near the free-throw line. Henry went on to score 10 of Coastal next 11 points as she connected on a deep trey to tie the game at 28-all with 4:02 showing on the game clock. The Chants finished the half on a 9-3 run to take a 37-31 lead into the locker room.

Coastal pulled out to 10-point lead early in the second half with Henry capping the 8-4 run. Asheville refused to go away m as the Bulldogs methodically chipped away at the Chants’ lead before finally tying the game at 51 with 7:41 to play. Bulldogs Manly and Love combined for nine of Asheville’s 16 points in the game-tying run. The lead changed hands six more times over the ensuing 3:37 before the Chants closed the game on 14-3 run.

For the game, Coastal Carolina shot 42.4 percent (28-of-66) and totaled 41 rebounds and 14 steals, while only committing six turnovers. The Bulldogs shot 37.9 percent (22-of-58) from the floor for the game and held an 18-5 advantage in bench scoring.

Coastal Carolina remains home for both its bouts next week. The Chants start their second trip through the Big South on Thursday as hosts to Longwood at 7 p.m.  Longwood used a huge second half to down Coastal, 77-63, in Farmville, Va., on Jan. 19.
