Five local volleyball teams sweep through first round

mbvolley-huddleGrand Strand volleyball teams had more than a week off to prepare for the Class 3A and 4A playoffs after statewide flooding forced the postponement of the first round of the state tournament. It looks like they were more than ready.

Top-seeded Myrtle Beach, No. 2-seeded North Myrtle Beach, and No. 3-seeded St. James all won their Class 3A playoff openers on Thursday to advance to the second round. All three local teams scored 3-0 sweeps over their opponents.

Myrtle Beach defeated visiting Crestwood by scores of 25-6, 25-10 and 25-10 to make quick work of the Lady Bulldogs. Gracie Davis led the Lady Seahawks with 10 kills, and Lucia Sandoz, Maggie Slabinski and Cassie Runyon had five kills each.

North Myrtle Beach swept Darlington by scores of 25-12, 25-7 and 25-5. Maddie Roy made 17 assists, Claire Laughlin served four aces and the Lady Chiefs combined for 18 kills to cruise past the Lady Falcons.

St. James was the only local team on the road but the Lady Sharks had little trouble against Marlboro County. The sweep sends the Lady Sharks into the second round against an opponent to be determined. Myrtle Beach and North Myrtle Beach host second round games.

In Class 4A, top-seeded Socastee and No. 2-seeded Carolina Forest also rolled into the second round with 3-0 sweeps. The Lady Braves defeated Spring Valley 25-15, 25,-14 and 25-22. Seniors Mary D. Guest, Eden Dukes and Dale Rogers combined for 27 kills on 33 attempts, Megan Faris chipped in five more kills, and Katelynn Hine had 44 assists. They face White Knoll on Tuesday.

Carolina Forest took down Summerville by scores of 25-11, 25-22 and 25-11. Leading the way for the Lady Panthers were Ellissa Small with 17 kills, Alexis Tomlin with 15 kills, and Kenzlie Andresen with nine kills. They will continue playoffs Tuesday.
