Former CCU coach Bennett to take AD post at Socastee

It appears that former Coastal Carolina football coach David Bennett didn’t have to look very far for his next job. In fact, just a few miles down Highway 544.

GrandStrandSportsReport.com has learned that Bennett is set to become the next athletics director at Socastee High, replacing outgoing Roger Dixon after his last day on July 31.

Bennett became a candidate for the job following his unceremonious firing and somewhat contentious contract buyout negotiations, which saw him earn the full $925,000 settlement.

Coastal fired Bennett with five years remaining on his 10-year contract after going 63-39 in nine seasons as the head coach of the Chanticleers and replaced him with rookie college head coach Joe Moglia last December.

Bennett considered a run for the new 7th Congressional District but opted against a career change to politics. He served as a volunteer assistant boys golf coach at Conway High, where son Jeb plays.

The only sticking point at Socastee is Bennett’s absence of a teaching certificate, but the school appears to be working through those issues. It is still to be decided what teaching duties, if any, Bennett will hold.

Bennett has a Bachelor of Arts degree in history and social studies from Presbyterian College and a masters in guidance and counseling from Clemson. He also served as an assistant football coach at Goose Creek High before moving up to the college ranks at Newberry, Catawba and Coastal.

As for a return to coaching, Horry County Schools regulations forbid ADs from also holding a head coaching post. Conway AD and football coach Chuck Jordan is the lone leftover from when the rule was grandfathered in. Socastee football coach Tim Renfrow gave up his AD post years ago to serve as head football coach for the Braves.
