Former CCU star Simpson indicted on drug charges

Former Coastal Carolina standout and current Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Jerome Simpson was indicted on one drug charge Thursday, four months to the day since he was arrested for having 2.5 pounds of marijuana shipped to his Covington, Ky. home, the Cincinnati Enquirer reported.

Simpson was indicted on one count of trafficking marijuana in excess of eight ounces, a felony punishable by 1 to 5 years in prison. An arraignment date in Kenton Circuit Court was set for Jan. 30 and prosecutors say Simpson may be eligible for pre-trail intervention and avoid any jail time, the report said.

Federal authorities swarmed his Crestview Hills townhouse in September and seized a package containing 2.5 pounds of California marijuana that had been shipped to the residence. Inside the home investigators found about 6 more pounds of marijuana, scales and smoking devices.

When the package arrived, Simpson’s 27-year-old acquaintance, Aleen Smith, accepted it from the delivery man, according to authorities. Teammate Anthony Collins was at the home when the package was delivered but was not indicted on Thursday.

Simpson gained national attention in December with his 19-yard TD catch that ended with a front flip over Arizona Cardinals linebacker Daryl Washington from the 2-yard line into the end zone. The second-round draft pick out of Coastal Carolina just completed his fourth year with the Bengals and is now an unrestricted free agent, the report said.

There is no immediate word on what impact the case will have on his football future. Once his situation is settled through the legal system, the NFL, which has been cracking down hard on players’ off-field behavior in recent years, also will have a say about when he can return to the league.

Simpson stepped into a starting role for the Bengals this year following the offseason losses of receivers Chad Ochocinco and Terrell Owens. He had 50 catches and four touchdowns this season.
