Former Chant Childers inks free-agent deal with Rams

Former Coastal Carolina tight end Jamie Childers has signed a rookie free agent contract with the St. Louis Rams.

Childers was a valuable and versatile weapon for the Chanticleer offense this past season, earning second team All-Big South honors as a tight end. He contributed both at tight end and quarterback, playing a key role in the Chants closing the season with three straight wins.

After missing three-plus games with a knee injury, Childers returned to the field for Senior Day, Nov. 5. He would start the game at tight end, but would be forced to move to quarterback after Aramis Hillary was injured. With under five minutes to play, Childers completed a 35-yard, game-winning touchdown pass to DeMario Bennett.

The following week, Childers caught four passes for 92 yards and two scores at Charleston Southern, including what proved to be the game winner. In the season finale at Western Carolina, Childers only caught two passes for 39 yards before leaving the game with an injury. However, he did give Coastal 17-0 lead with a 15-yard TD reception.

For the season, Childers caught 11 passes for 233 yards, averaging a school-record 21.2 yards per reception with three touchdowns. As a quarterback, he completed 15-of-38 passes for 209 yards with two TDs and no interceptions. For his career, Childers had 30 receptions for 451 yards (15.0 avg.) and four touchdowns. At quarterback, he completed 48-of-108 passes for 545 yards with five TDs, while having 91 rushing attempts for 280 yards and four scores.

Childers joins teammate Josh Norman, who was drafted in the fifth round by the Carolina Panthers in April, Tyler Thigpen, Jerome Simpson, Mike Tolbert, Quinton Teal, and Maurice Simpkins as Chanticleers to sign NFL contracts.

Childers will attempt to make the Rams’ 53-man roster on opening day, or the team’s eight-player practice squad.
