Former NMB punter Quigley signs 3-year deal with Bears

North Myrtle Beach graduate and former kicker for the Chiefs Ryan Quigley has agreed to a three-year deal with the Chicago Bears. The contract is dependent upon Quigley making the team, but he is now one step closer to the dream of playing in the NFL.

Quigley, the son of North Myrtle Beach athletic director Joe Quigley, graduated from North Myrtle Beach High School in 2008 and then played four years for Boston College on a full athletic scholarship. Last season he was fourth in the nation with 28 punts inside-the-20.

The contract offer came after a three-day mini camp held in Chicago that ended yesterday and saw 33 invited hopefuls in attendance. Of that number only six were offered contracts.

Joining Quigley in that group were Wisconsin-Whitewater quarterback Matt Blanchard, Texas Southern receiver Joseph Anderson, Illinois State tight end Brandon Venson, Concordia tackle Tyler Hendrickson, Central Florida guard Nick Pieschel and Connecticut kicker David Teggart.

Bears head coach Lovie Smith said “the group of tryout guys that came here without a contract, I’m always anxious to see what we have from those and a few of the guys really made us take notice. This was an excellent group of guys that hopefully can contribute in some way to us.”

Quigley and the other new signees will join their veteran teammates Monday when the team’s voluntary offseason program resumes. He is expected to stay in Chicago through June before returning home for a few days rest.

When asked about the experience and his performance during the minicamp, Quigley said “I thought I did OK, but obviously it was good enough to get signed. It was tough, not knowing what to expect, but once you get on the field you just go at it to see who the best guy is. It was a great experience.”

Although it was initially reported in some local media outlets that Quigley had signed a contract with the Bears several weeks ago, that was not the case. At the time, he had only been invited to the minicamp for an opportunity to continue the process.

“People sometimes don’t understand, it’s a process that we have to go through,” he said. “The Bears only carry one punter through the season, and they have a veteran (Adam) Podlesh, so I’ll be competing with him for the job.”

Opportunity is something that Quigley is indeed excited about “It’s another blessing, another great opportunity, God has a plan for me and I’m just trying to follow it. To sit back and think about all the people that have been a part of it, it’s surreal. I’m very grateful.”

When Monday morning practice begins, Quigley will be introduced to the team. “I think about tomorrow and trying to enjoy every minute of it. You only stay here if you are good enough.”
