Matthews makes it five USC players taken in MLB Draft

South Carolina had five players picked during this week’s Major League Baseball Draft after South Carolina senior outfielder Adam Matthews was selected in the 29th round on Wednesday’s third day of the draft.

Matthews was the No. 892 overall pick by the Cincinnati Reds. Matthews is the fifth current Gamecock player to be drafted this year.

The Baltimore Orioles earlier selected Christian Walker (fourth round) and Matt Price (seventh round) with the Arizona Diamondbacks taking Evan Marzilli (eighth round) and the Los Angeles Angles of Anaheim choosing Michael Roth (ninth round).

Matthews serves as captain along with Price and Roth. Matthews was named 2012 Columbia Regional MVP after hitting .385 with a homer, four runs scored and six RBI last weekend.

Matthews had three RBI in the 7-0 win over Manhattan, hit a two-run homer in the 5-4 win over Clemson and tallied a RBI single in the 4-3 victory over the Tigers. He is hitting .241 (47-for-195) on the year with five homers and 25 RBI. including two to the Baltimore Orioles.

Price is the all-time saves leader at South Carolina with 40 as well as appearances with 97 for the Garnet & Black. Price is just one save shy of the SEC record of 41 set by Joshua Fields of Georgia (2005-08).

Price earned second-team All-SEC honors this year and is 4-4 with a 3.68 ERA in 22 games with 10 saves. Nine of his 10 saves came in SEC play. Price earned All-America honors last year and was named to the CWS All-Tournament Team. He has served as closer for the Gamecocks since his redshirt freshman season in 2010.

Roth has been selected in the ninth round of the 2012 MLB Draft. Roth was the No. 297 overall pick in the draft by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Roth is the fourth current Gamecock player to be selected in this year’s draft.

A two-time captain and the 2012 SEC H. Boyd McWhorter Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year, Roth is 6-1 with a 2.68 ERA in 16 starts with 107.1 innings pitched. He has 76 strikeouts to 35 walks and opponents are batting just .215 against him. I

In SEC games, Roth went 3-1 with a 3.43 ERA. He hurled 65.2 innings in 10 league starts. Roth earned Consensus All-America honors in 2011 and was CollegeBaseballInsider.com’s National Player of the Year. He started both the championship-clinching games of the 2010 and 2011 College World Series in Omaha, Neb.

Roth has a career record of 23-6 at South Carolina. He has 90 career appearances as a Gamecock, second only to current teammate Matt Price. He also has hurled 324.2 innings in his career, just four innings shy of the Top 10 career list.

Marzilli was selected in the eighth round of the 2012 MLB Draft. Marzilli was the No. 273 overall pick in the draft by the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Marzilli earned 2012 SEC All-Defensive Team honors and he is one of two players on the squad this year to have started all 60 games. Marzilli is hitting .288 (68-for-236) with 12 doubles, three triples, a pair of homers, 30 RBI and 50 runs scored.
