Gamecocks down Chants; Senior Night for Arambula

uscsoc-arambulaThe No. 9/11 Coastal Carolina University men’s soccer team fell by a 1-0 score to No. 22/28 South Carolina in the regular season finale for both sides in Columbia Saturday evening.

The loss drops the Chants to 12-2-3 on the season, while the Gamecocks improve to 10-6-1. The Gamecock win snapped Coastal’s six-game win streak in the series.

Former Myrtle Beach High standout was honored before the game as the Gamecocks celebrated Senior Night.

South Carolina scored in the 36th minute to take the 1-0 lead, which held throughout the remainder of the match. Wesley Eads attempted a shot from inside the 18-yard box that was saved, but not controlled by Coastal’s Fernando Pina. The rebound bounced out to Trygve Ellingstad, who slotted it home. The goal was the first surrendered by the Chants in the past three matches and only the 11th allowed this season.

Coastal had a prime opportunity to net the equalizer in the 44th minute as Jair Espinoza forced a 1v1 with South Carolina’s William Pyle. But Pyle was able to smother Espinoza’s shot from inside the box to send the Gamecocks into the intermission with the 1-0 advantage.

The Chanticleers attacked early and often in the second half in search of the equalizer. However, the Gamecock backline and keeper repeatedly turned away the Coastal attackers’ shots and centering crosses.

Coastal’s Sergio Camargo, who returned to the pitch after missing six games due to injury, had a look at the equalizer in the final minute. A South Carolina foul on Tobenna Uzo just outside the 18-yard box set up Camargo’s free kick, but Pyle was able to save the shot and preserve the victory.

The match featured a combined 42 shots as the Gamecocks attempted 24 and the Chants 20. Coastal did out-corner their in-state foe 9-5. Coastal’s Pina recorded six saves in the match, while South Carolina’s Pyle was credited with three.

Coastal now turns its attention toward the 2015 Big South Tournament. The Chanticleers are the No. 3 seed in the tournament and will host No. 6 seed High Point on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
