Gamecocks leapfrog Tigers in the Top 10 of polls, BCS

South Carolina jumped into the top 10 of the BCS standings and the ESPN/USA Today and Associated Press college football polls Sunday following its 14-3 victory at Tennessee, while Clemson fell out of the top 10 after suffering its first loss of the season Saturday night, 31-17 at Georgia Tech.

The Gamecocks moved up to ninth in the BCS standings and Clemson dropped to 11th after reaching its highest spot ever at No. 5 last week.

There was plenty of movement throughout the coaches poll, except at the top. While five ranked teams lost and another five escaped with narrow wins, LSU and Alabama were idle and remained in the top two slots, setting up their showdown next weekend. LSU received 41 first-place votes and 1,457 points while Alabama received 18 and 1,434. The SEC West rivals both are 8-0 and meet in Birmingham on Saturday night.

Stanford remained third after escaping with a triple-overtime win over USC. Oklahoma State and Boise State remained fourth and fifth, respectively. The highest-ranked one loss team is Oregon (7-1), up one spot to sixth and followed by Oklahoma, Arkansas, Nebraska and South Carolina rounding out the top 10. The latter two schools each climbed four rungs.

Virginia Tech also moved up four slots to 11th and is followed by Clemson, Michigan, Houston, Penn State, Michigan State, Wisconsin, Arizona State, Kansas State and Georgia. Clemson dropped four spots following its tough loss to Georgia Tech.

The Gamecocks also jumped Clemson in the AP poll, which also saw its top five spots remain unchanged. LSU and Alabama helddown the top two spots heading into their weekend showdown, and Oklahoma State, Stanford and Boise State rounded out the top five. LSU received 47 first-place votes, Alabama had 10 while Boise St. got one.

Oregon was at No.6 in front of Oklahoma, Arkansas, Nebraska and South Carolina. No. 11 Clemson is followed by Virginia Tech, Michigan, Houston and Michigan St.

West Virginia jumped three spots to 21st and is followed by Cincinnati, Georgia Tech, Southern Miss and Texas. Georgia Tech and Texas are new entries this week, while Texas A&M and Texas Tech dropped out.
