Gamecocks pitchers give Davidson the gas in 2-1 win

Five Gamecock pitchers combined to limit Davidson to one run on five hits as third ranked South Carolina improved to 34-11 on the year with a 2-1 victory over the Wildcats (16-26) on Wednesday night at Carolina Stadium.

Freshman first baseman Kyle Martin drove in the winning run in the fourth inning to give the Gamecocks the victory and Evan Marzilli added a sacrifice fly.

The starting lineup showed South Carolina head coach Ray Tanner tapping six freshmen to start, the most that he has ever started for the Gamecocks. Freshman right-hander Joel Seddon toed the slab for the Gamecocks in his first start of the year. The first inning saw him tie his career-high in strikeouts by sitting down the side. Seddon would finish with four strikeouts in four innings on the night and he allowed one run on three hits.

Sophomore right-hander Forrest Koumas would pitch a scoreless fifth inning with a strikeout to pick up the win. He is now 2-2 on the year. Freshman right-hander Evan Beal worked two scoreless frames, junior left-hander Tyler Webb went 0.2 innings and junior right-hander Matt Price closed out the win to earn his sixth save of the year with 1.1 hitless innings and two strikeouts. Davidson starter Brian Russell suffered the loss and is 4-5 on the year. He allowed two runs on six hits in 5.2 innings with three walks and two strikeouts.

Davidson marked the board first in their half of the second inning as James Cerbie led off with a double down the left field line on the first pitch he saw. After advancing on a wild pitch, Ryan Lowe knocked a ground ball to second that brought home the opening run.

The Garnet and Black answered back in the third. Freshman right fielder Tanner English led off with a beautiful bunt single to the right side. After taking second on a stolen base, English advanced to third on a flyout by Chase Vergason. Fellow freshman TJ Costen would follow with a walk, bringing up junior centerfielder Evan Marzilli. The Cranston, R.I. native would knock in English with his team-leading seventh sacrifice fly of the season to tie the game up at one, heading to the fourth.

The Gamecocks took the lead in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI double by Martin. Shortstop Joey Pankake got the inning started with a leadoff walk. After being sacrificed over to second by Adam Matthews, Martin stepped to the plate and laced a one-out double into right-center to give Carolina the 2-1 advantage.

South Carolina had six hits with Davidson ending the evening with five. English went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases and a run scored. He leads the Gamecocks with 16 multi-hit games. Forrest Brandt went 2-for-4 to lead Davidson at the plate.

The Gamecocks hit the road for a weekend SEC series beginning on Friday night at Arkansas. First pitch for the opener is set for 8 p.m.
