‘GameDay’ hits Columbia for No. 5 Dawgs vs. No. 6 ‘Cocks

Lee, Kirk, Chris and more than 80,000 of their rowdy friends are coming to Columbia for Saturday’s SEC showdown between No. 5 Georgia and No. 6 South Carolina.

ESPN’s “College GameDay” and ESPNU’s “College Road Trip” will broadcast from the famed Horseshoe, across the street from Williams-Brice Stadium, where the unbeaten Bulldogs and Gamecocks will battle it out for control of the SEC East Division. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. with the game televised live on ESPN.

“The horseshoe is one of the best sites we’ve ever had for College GameDay,” said Lee Fitting, College GameDay Sr. Coordinating Producer. “The picturesque collegiate backdrop creates the perfect setting for the show. Given the fact that a highly-ranked Georgia team is coming to town, it will only add to the excitement of Saturday morning.”

GameDay, in its 26th year, will be making its fifth all-time visit to the Gamecock’s campus, the most recent being October 9, 2010 when then-No. 19 South Carolina toppled then-No. 1 Alabama 35-21. GameDay’s first two visits to Columbia were when current ESPN analyst Lou Holtz held the head coaching reigns for South Carolina. In fact, the only time Lee Corso picked South Carolina with his famous headgear selection (9/11/04 vs. Georgia) — he pegged Holtz as a game changer. South Carolina went on to fall to the Bulldogs, 20-16.

Both the Bulldogs (5-0, 3-0) and Gamecocks (5-0, 3-0) are coming off big SEC wins. Georgia won a 51-44 shootout with Tennessee and South Carolina rallied in the second half for a 38-17 victory at Kentucky. The win tied a school record for nine consecutive wins, giving them the chance to go for a record 10th.

South Carolina football team held steady in the national polls released today, ranking sixth in both the Associated Press and USA Today/Coaches polls for the second straight week. This is the first time the Gamecocks have been ranked in the top 6 in the country in back-to-back weeks in the AP poll since the 1984 season.

The Gamecocks have been ranked among the nation’s Top-10 teams according to the Associated Press in eight-straight polls, dating back to last season. That marks a new school record, surpassing the previous mark of seven, also set during the 1984 campaign.

College GameDay will air live at 9 a.m. ET on ESPNU and 10 a.m. on ESPN with host Chris Fowler, analysts Lee Corso, Kirk Herbstreit, Desmond Howard and David Pollack, and host/reporter Samantha Steele and Tom Rinaldi.
