Grand Strand’s Richards to semifinals in Jr. US Open

cammmmsssGarden City Beach’s Cam Richards finds himself in two battles this week.

He’s currently in Huntington Beach, California surfing in the Van’s US Open of Surfing, Junior Men’s Division, and has advanced to the semifinal match-up. He’ll surf tomorrow around 1pm, California time and face Seth Moniz & Kalani David from Hawaii,  and Japan’s Hiroto Arai. Finals are set for Saturday afternoon.

Richards advanced to the semifinals by winning his round one heat and picking up second place in round two, he slipped in a couple of air reverses to win his quarterfinal matchup and advance with Arai.

He finished as the runner-up in the 2014 event that runs in conjunction with the men’s and women’s WSL contest with the same name.

But, it’s an online contest that has the Grand Strand area buzzing. Surfline.com has been running an online voting contest for the last few weeks and Richards, representing America, has advanced to the final round along with fellow competitor Nick Rozsa. They’re facing off against Indonesian representatives Garut Widiarta and Oney Anwar.

Although the voting is a little confusing, Richard’s father and owner of Village Surf Shop, Kelly Richards, says it would mean a lot to Cam. “There’s ten thousand dollars up for grabs for the winner. We thought this thing would be an easy win for Cam, but it looks like it’s going to come down to the wire. We need everyone to vote and ask their friends to vote,” said Richards from his shaping bay inside Village Surf Shop.

In the world of surfing, a ten thousand dollar check is no small amount, even if the money will have to be split between the two American competitors should they win.

So, how do you vote? Here’s the details provided by Richards:

1. Click on the link here.
2. Watch the short video
3. After it’s finished click the next button 5 times
4. Click on USA and drag it to the voting box
5. Click vote

The contest ends Friday.

UPDATE:: With voting finalized, Cam Richards and the American team won the online voting contest. Edging out the Indonesian team by just over 200 votes.
