Girls Hoops: Braves, Angelo beat buzzer, Myrtle Beach

conghoops-12layupSocastee High junior Mia Angelo hit a game-winning 3-point basket at the buzzer to defeat visiting rival Myrtle Beach on Friday night.

Trailing by two with 4.7 seconds left, Angelo dribbled through the press past midcourt and unleashed the shot just ahead of the horn to send The Wave into a wild celebration.

Socastee’s Kira Bell led all scorers with 13 points and contributed seven rebounds and five assists. Bell hit two free throws with less than 30 seconds remaining in the game to tie it up at 39-all.

Myrtle Beach’s Keocia Walker scored in the paint to put the Lady Seahawks ahead by two, but Socastee called time out to set up the game-winning play.

Socastee’s Mia Angelo and Shayla Baldwin each finished with nine points apiece. The Lady Braves (8-6) and will open Region 6-4A play on Tuesday against visiting Conway.

Myrtle Beach was led by Kiana Adderton with 10 points and Nia Sumpter added nine.

Conway jumped out to a 12-2 lead by the Lady Chiefs rallied to take their first and only lead of the game at 21-19 early in the second quarter.

That’s when the Lady Tigers went on a run of 22 unanswered points to blow the game wide open, using a full-court press to convert turnovers into offense.

North Myrtle Beach tried to rally in the fourth with some sharp outside shooting, cutting the deficit to eight at 63-55 with 1:24 remaining. But the Lady Tigers hit their free throws late and held on for the non-region win.

Conway’s Meme Williams and Neci Hemingway led the way with 18 points apiece. The Lady Tigers open Region 6-4A play on Tuesday at Socastee, while North Myrtle Beach hosts St. James in Region 7-3A on Monday.
