Girls Hoops: MB nets share of region title; NMB, CF roll

nmbghoops-42putbackThe Myrtle Beach High girls basketball team wrapped up at least a share of the Region 7-4A championship with an impressive defensive performance Tuesday that should serve as a warning to future foes.

The Lady Seahawks’ (17-2 overall, 6-0 Region 7-4A) defense held visiting St. James scoreless for the opening 14 minutes of play en route to a 45-14 rout of the Lady Sharks, clinching the region crown for their fourth consecutive region title in their ninth in 11 years.

Myrtle Beach’s Kiana Adderton scored a game-high 18 points and fellow senior all-stater Nia Sumpter tallied eight. But the bulk of damage was done on the defensive end, where the Lady Seahawks built a 17-0 lead before allowing St. James’ first basket with less than 2 minutes left in the first half.

Myrtle Beach gets a week off before returning to action at Marlboro County on Monday with a chance to win the region outright.

* North Myrtle Beach 81, Marlboro County 32:  The Lady Chiefs put on a solid offensive display in blowing out the Lady Bulldogs.

Marlboro County actually led 17-14 after the first quarter but they were unable to match that point total the rest of the way. North Myrtle Beach outscored them 28-6 in the second quarter and the rout was on.

Julie Carini scored a game-high 14 points as all 14 Lady Chiefs made the score column, including the six seniors honored on Senior Night. Shaquera Johnson scored 11 points, and Jordan Berger and Anslee Wood tallied 10 apiece.

The Lady Chiefs (14-8, 5-2) face a key showdown at Wilson on Friday for second place in the region.

* Carolina Forest 59, Sumter 50: The Lady Panthers saw a 22-point led cut to single digits, but they kept their composure on the road and held on for the big Region 6-5A win.

Carolina Forest’s Alexis Tomlin had a big night, scoring 28 points, grabbing 21 rebounds and making five assists – all team-highs. Cheyenne Pyles added 14 points, and Ellen Nardella added 11 points and eight rebounds.

The Lady Panthers (14-6, 6-3) travel to Socastee on Thursday.

* West Florence 40, Conway 27: The Lady Tigers went ice cold from the field to suffer their first region loss to the Lady Knights.

West Florence jumped out to a 23-8 halftime lead and held off the Lady Tigers (12-5, 7-1), who face South Florence on Thursday looking to stay on top for the region title.
