Girls Hoops: MB survives cold spell, tops St. James

mbghoops-2layupThe chilly weather that swept through the Grand Strand this week must have hit particularly hard at Myrtle Beach High, where the No. 5-ranked Lady Seahawks survived a record cold spell to defeat visiting St. James 40-32.

The Lady Seahawks (14-4, 2-1) came out hot for a 19-point first quarter but went scoreless for the entire second period. The Lady Sharks (10-6, 2-1) were experiencing a similar cold spell of their own and trailed 19-14 at halftime.

Myrtle Beach’s struggles from the field continued in the second half but managed to maintain a lead and extend it with some sharp free throw shooting down the stretch. The Lady Seahawks hit 10 of 14 foul shots for the game.

Myrtle Beach’s Kiana Adderton led Myrtle Beach with 11 points and Ivy Collins chipped in 10. St. James’ Kimmie Hotzelt had a game-high 12 points and Abigail Rumpf tallied 10.

Myrtle Beach faces North Myrtle Beach on Friday, while St. James takes on Lake City.

* North Myrtle Beach 61, Georgetown 35: The Lady Chiefs claimed their first victory in Region 7-3A with a blowout over the visiting Lady Bulldogs.

Aquera Johnson posted an impressive double-double with 20 points and 15 rebounds to lead North Myrtle Beach. Shaquera Johnson added 15 points and Julie Carini chipped in 10 for the Lady Chiefs (5-12, 1-2), who welcome rival Myrtle Beach on Friday.

* Sumter 65, Carolina Forest 39: The Lady Panthers (8-9, 1-2) came out ice cold and could never catch up to the first-place Lady Gamecocks, who led 20-5 after the first quarter and never looked back.

Carolina Forest plays host to Conway on Friday.

* Conway 48, West Florence 40: The Lady Tigers (9-7, 2-1) moved into a tie for second place in Region 6-4A with a win over the visiting Lady Knights.

Aishera Williams and Zakera Chadmon scored 14 points apiece for the Lady Tigers, who travel to Carolina Forest on Friday.
