Girls Hoops: NMB outguns St. James; MB nips Wilson

The North Myrtle Beach girls basketball team staked an early claim to the Region 7-3A crown in Tuesday’s league opener by defeating reigning titleholder St. James 51-37.

Senior Taylor Allman lit it up from 3-point range, connecting on 5 of 11 attempts for a game-high 25 points to lead the No. 7-ranked Lady Chiefs (13-2 overall, 1-0 region).

Teammate India Farmer scored 12 points and Ja’Quella Livingston pulled down 10 rebounds, giving the Lady Chiefs a critical 44-34 edge on the boards over the visiting Lady Sharks (8-7, 0-1).

St. James was led by Hannah Price’s 19 points but no one else came close to scoring in double figures as the Lady Sharks were limited to 22 percent shooting on the night.

* Myrtle Beach 49, Wilson 47: The Lady Seahawks have gotten used to getting double-double performances from senior Tanisha Brown. Not so from eighth-grader Kiana Adderton.

Brown led the Lady Seahawks with 18 points and 10 rebounds and Adderton came through with a season-high 10 points and 10 boards to pave the way to a region-opening victory.

Myrtle Beach’s Tosha Chestnut hit a layup with 40 seconds left and the defense did the rest to make it the game-winning basket.

* Socastee 46, Georgetown 38: The Lady Braves broke open a tie game going into the fourth quarter for a hard-fought victory over the Lady Bulldogs in the Region 7-3A opener for both teams.

Socastee’s Kirstin Zanardo and Blake Smith scored 14 points apiece, and Smith made it a double-double by pulling down 12 rebounds for the Lady Braves (10-5, 1-0), who hit their free throws down the stretch to preserve the comeback win.

* Carolina Forest 58, West Florence 54: The Lady Panthers put together a fourth-quarter rally to win their Region 6-4A opener against the visiting Lady Knights.

Carolina Forest’s Ashleigh Turner exploded for a game-high 24 points and Marisa Runyon posted a double-double of 15 points and 12 rebounds for the Lady Panthers (4-11 overall, 1-0 region).
