Girls Hoops: NMB, CF win, remain unbeaten in region

nmbghoops-44blockThe North Myrtle Beach High girls basketball team sent notice that they too are a region title contender this season, staying undefeated in league play with a convincing 70-41 road victory over Marlboro County on Friday night.

Competing in Region 7-4A, where front-runners and top-10-ranked Myrtle Beach and Wilson were projected to battle for the championship, North Myrtle Beach is tied atop the standings with big showdowns looming against the state powers.

North Myrtle Beach also played like one Friday. Leading only by a 28-23 score at halftime, the Lady Chiefs (11-6 overall, 2-0 region) outscored the Lady Bulldogs (4-9- 0-1) by a 22-8 margin in the third period to pull away for good.

North Myrtle Beach’s Aquera Johnson led all scorers with 20 points, and Savanna Wood had a breakout night with 17 points. Jenna Berger added 10 points as a total of 10 Lady Chiefs made it into the score column.

North Myrtle Beach plays host to Wilson on Tuesday and rival Myrtle Beach on Jan. 24.

* Carolina Forest 53, Sumter 42: The Lady Panthers battled back from a halftime deficit to defeat the Lady Gamecocks and remain undefeated in region play.

Carolina Forest outscored Sumter 32-17 in the second half despite struggling at the free throw line all evening. The Lady Panthers used defensive intensity to force turnovers and create some easy baskets.

Alexis Tomlin scored 22 of her 28 points in the second half, and her 21 rebounds and four blocks gave her an impressive double-double performance. Cheyenne Pyles scored points, and Ellen Nardella six points and had 11 rebounds.

The Lady Panthers (11-4, 3-0) travel to face rival Conway on Tuesday for a first-place showdown.

* Conway 54, West Florence 36: The Lady Tigers moved to 3-0 in region play thanks to a pair of big games by Lanaejah Evans and Neci Hemingway with 16 and 15 points, respectively.

* Socastee 36, South Florence 31: The Lady Braves used a strong second half surge to knock off the Lady Bruins. Shayla Baldwin scored a game-high 16 points and Mercer Roberts added 11 to lead Socastee.
