Girls Hoops: Revenge win vaults MB into region lead

mbghoops-15passThe Myrtle Beach High girls basketball team had this one circled on its calendar. It turned out to be worth the wait.

After losing their region opener to Wilson 59-56 on Jan. 9, the Lady Seahawks (17-4 overall, 5-1 Region 7-3A) got a little payback in Friday’s rematch with a 59-35 victory over the visiting Lady Tigers (3-2 region).

Myrtle Beach’s Nia Sumpter scored a game-high 25 points and made it a double-double by pulling down 12 rebounds as the Lady Seahawks captured sole possession of first place in the region standings.

Myrtle Beach senior guard Keocia Walker returned from a hand injury and had a hot hand instead, scoring 14 points for the Lady Seahawks. Kiana Adderton added 12 points as Myrtle Beach was never threatened.

Myrtle Beach led Wilson 22-13 at halftime but caught fire in the second half to pull away. The Lady Seahawks play host to Lake City on Tuesday.

* North Myrtle Beach 40, St. James 31: The Lady Chiefs (7-13, 3-3) used an 11-2 run to close out an otherwise tight game, knocking the Lady Sharks (12-7, 4-2) from a share of first place in Region 7-3A.

Trailing 29-28 in the fourth quarter, North Myrtle Beach got a putback and a layup from Aquera Johnson to take the lead for good. The Lady Chiefs hit their free throws down the stretch to put themselves in the thick of the region playoff race.

North Myrtle Beach plays host to Wilson on Tuesday with a chance to take over a share of second place in the region.

* Socastee 50, West Florence 31: Mia Angelo scored a game-high 22 points to lead the Lady Braves (9-10, 2-3) to a key region victory over the Lady Knights. Socastee plays host to rival Conway on Tuesday.

* South Florence 54, Carolina Forest 41: The Lady Panthers (9-11, 2-4) suffered a tough road loss to the last place Lady Bruins, who earned their first region win. Carolina Forest plays host to West Florence on Tuesday.

* Sumter 69, Conway 44: The second-place Lady Tigers (11-6, 4-2) were no match for the first-place Lady Gamecocks, who remained a perfect 6-0 in league play. Conway travels to rival Socastee on Tuesday.
