Girls Hoops: St. Joe’s tops MB; Chargers rally for win

cbhi-diveSt. Joseph Central Catholic (Huntington, WV) defeated host Myrtle Beach (SC) 63-36 in the opening round of the CresCom Bank Holiday Invitational on Tuesday night.

Myrtle Beach (3-3) scored the first point of the game from the free throw line just 48 seconds into the contest but that would prove to be the only lead for the Seahawks.  St. Joseph (5-1) went on a 13-4 run to open a 13-5 advantage and went on to lead 36-17 at halftime.  The Fighting Irish led by as many as 32 points in the second half.

St. Joseph was led by Mychal Johnson’s 18 points and six assists.  Rachel Lee added 16 points and eight rebounds for the Fighting Irish, while Griffin Dempsey chipped in with 11 points and six assists.  Myrtle Beach was paced by freshman Kiana Adderton’s 15 points and five rebounds.

* In one of the best opening round games that anyone can remember in the CresCom Bank Holiday Invitational, Northwood Academy (North Charleston, SC) scored a come-from-behind 71-68 victory over Seton-LaSalle (Pittsburgh, PA).

Trailing most of the game and by as many as 14 points in the second half, Northwood Academy (7-1) used a 20-6 run during a 6:34 stretch to tie the game at 52-52 with 7:12 to play.  Amber Campbell scored eight of her game-high 39 points during the run and Haliyah Sumter connected on a pair of 3-pointers.  Seton-LaSalle (2-3) rebuilt leads as many as four points before losing the lead on an Eden Crowell 3-point basket with 2:25 to play that gave the Chargers a 65-63 lead.  The lead was the first for Northwood Academy since a 4-3 lead at the 13:48 mark of the first half.

Erika Martin’s back-to-back layups gave Northwood Academy a 69-63 cushion with 1:29 to play.  Nicolete Newman connected on a long trey and Naje Gibson hit a jumper from the left wing to pull Seton-LaSalle to within one point at 69-68 with just 19 seconds to play.  Campbel connected on a pair of free throws with six seconds remaining to give the Chargers a 71-68 advantage.  Newman’s three-pointer from the baseline at the buzzer rimmed out to secore the win for Northwood Academy.

* Orangeburg-Wilkinson (Orangeburg, SC) ran out to a double-digit lead midway through the opening half and cruised to a 54-31 victory over Kings Fork (VA).

The Bruins (6-0) forced Kings Fork (5-1) into 26 turnovers and turned them into 28 points.  Dejoria Howard’s 13 points and six rebounds led a balanced attack for Orangeburg-Wilkinson.  Sade Johnson added 12 points and eight rebounds while Kierra Mitchell chipped in 12 points.

Kings Fork was paced by Khadedra Crocker’s game-highs of 21 points and 12 rebounds.

* Miami (FL) Senior opened the 2013 CresCom Bank Holiday Invitational with a 57-30 victory over Timmonsville (SC).  The Stingarees pulled away in the second half in route to the victory by shooting 50 percent from the floor in the final 16-minute period.

Leading 23-16 at halftime, Miami Senior (12-0) connected on just 27.6 percent from the field in the first half.  The second period saw the Stingarees outscore Timmonsville (7-1) 34-14 behind 13-of26 shooting from the field.  Miami Senior also dominated on the glass as the Stingarees outrebounded the Whirlwinds 40-20.

Leading the way for Miami Senior was 6-4 junior center Beatrice Mompremier as she posted a double-double with 15 points and 14 rebounds.  Sade Eli led Timmonsville with 18 points as she connected on 9-of-10 from the free throw line.

* Wednesday night the high school girls yield the court to the college players at the CNHI, with Coastal Carolina facing College of Charleston before No. 10 South Carolina and No. 15 North Carolina meet in a key top 15 showdown. The high school tournamament resumes Thursday and runs through Saturday.
