Girls Lacrosse: Sharks cap Senior Night with 707 win

Socastee carried a nine-game winning streak and loads of confidence and momentum into Thursday’s girls lacrosse installment of the Battle of Highway 707. Unfortunately for the Lady Braves, St. James had its own motivation.

Playing their fourth season as a program, the Lady Sharks (11-2) celebrated Senior Night and honored the eight upperclassmen who helped turn the upstart team into a state playoff contender. They defeated Socastee 20-9 and now await word about playoff positioning. So does Socastee after finishing the season at 10-3.

“It was a great game for us tonight and the team played together and kept it really tight,” said St. James coach Michael Lesando. “Playing Socastee is always tough and they gave us a good challenge tonight, but we were able to rise to the occasion and pull it out.”

Nine different players scored goals for the Lady Sharks, including hat tricks by seniors Reagan Parr and Sophie Lesando, who tallied her 66th goal of the season to lead the state and place third in the nation.

“My first two years playing Socastee was the best team in the area. To beet them it was the biggest upset,” said Sophie Lesando, who helped St. James sweep Socastee in her junior and senior seasons. “It is good that we can keep it up, since I remember playing them since my sophomore year and doing well. … I wanted my senior year to be a big deal.”

St. James wasted little time taking control, building a 9-2 lead at halftime. Led by Kelsey McElroy’s five goals, Socastee cut the deficit to 14-8 in the second half before the Lady Sharks rattled off six unanswered goals to slam the door.

* Carolina Forest 16, Waccamaw 7: The Lady Panthers saw senior captain Izzy DiMarino score six goals and an assist to lead them to a road win over the Lady Warriors.

Junior Abigail Gross added three goals and an assist, and senior Gabby Koseroski chipped in two goals. Freshmen Star Graham and Mary Alice Buzzek each added a goal and an assist. Rounding out the goals were Callan Curry, Serena Elias, Allie Cook and Kennedy Kimball with one each.

Sam Roberts, Anastasia Sillsbury and Alex Legge each added an asisst. Freshmen Goalie Lizzy Oliver had 4 saves.
