Girls Playoffs: Tigers edge Braves; Seahawks ousted

conghoops-20Top-seeded Conway survived a scare from rival Socastee in Monday night’s Class 5A Lower State semifinal, scoring a 33-27 victory over the visiting Lady Braves to reach the Lower State title game for the first time in program history.

The Lady Tigers (17-6) played from behind for much of the night before pulling out the win in the end. The Lady Braves (13-13) jumped out to a 10-2 lead after the opening period and clung to a 14-11 lead at halftime.

Conway closed the gap to a single point entering the final period, but Neci Hemingway’s basket gave the Lady Tigers their first lead early in the fourth quarter. Following a tight see-saw battle, the Lady Tigers iced it at the free throw line.

Conway advances to face Goose Creek in the Lower State final at the Florence Civic Center on Saturday.

* Lower Richland 35, Myrtle Beach 34: The Lady Seahawks’ quest to return to the state championship game was cut short by a single point in overtime Monday night in a Class 4A Lower State semifinal.

Myrtle Beach’s Nia Sumpter hit a pair of free throws in the final minute to give the Lady Seahawks (21-3) a one-point lead. But Lower Richland’s Seanavier Washington hit the game-winning basket with 3 seconds remaining to pull out the victory.

The No. 2 Lady Seahawks suffered their first loss of 2017 and their first defeat to an in-state team this season. The Lady Diamonds (17-8) advance to the 4A Lower State final on Saturday at the Florence Civic Center.
