Girls Soccer: MB survives scare from Warriors in PKs

The No. 3-ranked Myrtle Beach girls soccer team survived a scare from Waccamaw on Thursday night at Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium by winning in penalty kicks to claim a 4-3 victory.

Tied at 3-all at the end of regulation and two overtime periods, Myrtle Beach sophomore goalkeeper Mary Quinn Fullwood outdueled Waccamaw senior counterpart and Virginia Tech signee Sarah Allston Phillips and the Lady Seahawks scored the game-winning PK on senior Tristan Gordon’s re-kick.

Gordon’s first attempt rattled off the side post but the referee ruled that Phillips moved before the kick. Gordon didn’t miss on her second try to seal the 4-2 score in PKs. It was the third time of the night that Gordon found the back of the net, including a leaping scissor kick to convert a nice cross from freshman Hanna Weissman that put the Lady Seahawks ahead 3-2 with 9 minutes remaining in regulation.

But Waccamaw answered with 4 minutes left and Phillips made several big saves to send the game into PKs. Fullwood stopped the first two attempts by the Lady Warriors while Myrtle Beach converted four straight. Josie Posma, who also scored in regulation, joined Annamarie Puglia, Kinsey McGonigal and Gordon in making their attempts to pull out a hard-fought win against a team the Lady Seahawks defeated 4-0 in their season opener.

Myrtle Beach returns to region action Friday against visiting Marlboro County.

Christian Academy’s Anna Kate Green and Brae Jackson scored two goals apiece, and sisters Julia and Natalie Markley had one goal each.

The Lady Saints improved to 4-3 overall and 2-0 in the region.
