Golf: Casey’s 71 lifts Chiefs; local teams advance to LS

nmbgolf-regionchampsFive days after the North Myrtle Beach boys golf team lost out on the Region 7-4A regular-season title to rival Myrtle Beach, the Chiefs returned the favor on their home course Monday by defeating the Seahawks for the region tournament title.

The Chiefs’ top foursome shot an 18-hole team total 306 at Eagle Nest Golf Course in Little River, cruising past runner-up Myrtle Beach (320) and third-place St. James (328). Marlboro County (386) claimed the final spot to advance to next week’s Lower State Championships at The Hackler Course in Conway.

The Chiefs were led by medalist Chandler Casey with a round of 1-under-par 71 to capture Region Player of the Year honors. Chandler was followed by runner-up McClure Thompson (76), and fellow all-region teammates Matthew Griego (78) and David Lamb (81).

Holden Grigg of Myrtle Beach shot 78 to lead the Seahawks. He was joined on the all-region squad by teammates Keegan Vaugh and Dock Jarman with identical 79s. Seth Boyce rounded out Myrtle Beach’s foursome with an 84.

St James had three players shoot 81s to earn all-region honors -Coleman Bess, Drew Galloway and Walker Devers. Charlie Wike shot 85 to round out the Sharks’ foursome.

* All three local Class 5A teams qualified for the Lower State tournament by placing in the top four of Monday’s Region 6-5A tournament, but Sumter claimed the region title with an 18-hole round of 302.

The three locals teams were separated by only three strokes at The Hackler Course in Conway, but will meet again to settle the score at the Lower State tournament at Coosaw Creek Country Club in North Charleston.

Carolina Forest (330) was runner-up, thanks to a pair of solid rounds by all-region honorees Kevin Burris (75) and Chris Fortenberry (77). Fellow Panthers Alex Hawley (88) and Parker Stancil (90) rounded out Carolina Forest’s foursome.

Conway (332) was led by all-region honoree Connor Thomas (79), Raleigh Cook (83), Landon Cooper (84), and Cliff Todd (86).

Socastee (333) was paced by all-region selection Shane Peters (78), Chap Hutchinson (80), Lance Vu (87), and Jake Del Busse (88).
