It’s a good time to be a self-loathing Gamecock fan

col-tbuzz (2)Clemson, a series that normally trends the opposite way. Head ball coach Steve Spurrier made sure to remind Tiger fans of that fact on New Year’s Day after winning the Capital One Bowl, taking some of the luster off Clemson’s impending Orange Bowl victory.

The South Carolina baseball team just completed a three-game sweep of the Tigers on the diamond to earn the No. 1 spot in the national polls. The Gamecocks were within a run of making the College World Series for the fourth straight year last season, and they look talented and hungry enough to be Omaha-bound this year.

The South Carolina women’s basketball team claimed its first SEC championship and is ranked in the top five in the nation. Coach Dawn Staley has done an incredible job of building a program capable of winning the top conference in the country for women’s hoops. Her quick turn-around makes Spurrier’s accomplishment seem slow.

Even the men’s basketball team, which has struggled mightily in recent years and is testing the patience of second-year coach Frank “Don’t Call Me McGuire” Martin, got in the act by upsetting Kentucky on Saturday, prompting Gamecock fans to empty the stands and storm the court for a rare men’s hoops celebration.

The SEC fined South Carolina $25,000 for violating the policy, “at no time before, during or after a contest shall spectators be permitted to enter the competition area. It is the responsibility of each member institution to implement procedures to ensure compliance with this policy.”

But you won’t hear a lot of complaining about the price over the crowing of Gamecock fans. Even school president Harris Pastides took part in the post-game festivities. “Once I realized I was paying (the fine) anyway, I ran down,” he told the Daily Gamecock. . … I enjoyed every dollar.”

Like the Prez coming late to the party, lots of folks are jumping on the Gamecock bandwagon these days. True to the legend of the Chicken Curse, Tiger fans are laying low while watching and waiting for the wheels to fall off.
