Gore cousins give Chiefs close family atmosphere

nmbfoot-goresFresh off a school record 9-1 regular season and the Region 7-4A title, the North Myrtle Beach High football team has been like one big happy family. But the relationship is literal for a pair of Chiefs – cousins Tyler and T.J. Gore.

The juniors have played major roles for the Chiefs this season, both on and off the field, but their contributions are more than a lifetime in the making. Milton Gore, Tyler’s father and T.J.’s uncle, played on North Myrtle Beach’s previous record-holding team that went 8-2 in 1983, and he coached both boys growing up to get where they are today.

“We grew up playing rec ball against each other and we always knew we wanted to come out here to play for North Myrtle Beach and to make an impact,” said Tyler, a two-way player at wide receiver and defensive back for the Chiefs. “But we’ve been playing together all our lives so it’s nothing new to us.”

But this is uncharted territory for top-seeded North Myrtle Beach, which looks to improve on its program-best record Friday night with a rare double-digit win season. The Chiefs play host to Dreher in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs to kick off what they hope will be a deep run in the postseason.

Making the transition from middle linebacker to running back this season, T.J. leads the team in rushing with 786 yards and nine touchdowns. Cousin Tyler is the team’s leading receiver with 322 yards and eight TDs, as well as a top defender with 23 total tackles, two interceptions, a fumble recovery and a blocked punt.

“It’s been great all year, not only for me but for my teammates,” said Tyler, who has scored touchdowns for North Myrtle Beach on offense, defense and special teams. “I do everything I can to help the team out. It feels great to be a Chief.”

Now the Chiefs are experiencing the same family atmosphere the Gore cousins bring to the team.
