GSSR’s Massey named SC Sportswriter of the Year; Smothers, Sportscaster OTY

Grand Strand Sports Report’s Editor and Co-Founder Terry Massey has been named the South Carolina Sportswriter of the Year by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association. He’ll share the award in co-winner style with Gene Sapakoff of the The Post and Courier out of Charleston, SC.

Additionally, frequent GSSR contributor and local broadcaster Allen “The Bad Boy of Sports Radio” Smothers has been named the South Carolina Sportscaster of the year for the second year in a row. Smothers hosts a daily talk show in Florence, along with providing play-by-play broadcasts for many events throughout the year. “I appreciate the people in the business recognizing, not so much great work, but longevity. It was an honor to win it the first time, but two years in a row is very humbling,” said Smothers.

This is the first time in the 54 year history of the NSSA that a writer from an online only publication has received the sportswriter of the year award. NSSA’s Executive Director,  Dave Goren says “We knew this day was coming sooner or later, I think it’s a good thing that people are starting to recognize good writing is good writing, no matter the medium.”

Voted on by broadcasters and writers from all over the country, the nomination process begins in October with final voting occurring in December. Winners are notified shortly thereafter and plans begin to attend one of the most important nights in a sportscaster or sportswriter’s life. “This is strictly peer respect, and the folks that win these awards are often very humbled by the honor,” said Goren.

Goren describes the NSSA as a 54 year old organization that honors Sportscasters and Sportswriters for excellence. “We honor people in the present with our Sportscaster and Sportswriter awards, we honor the past with our Hall of Fame awards, and we are starting to plant the seeds with our younger sportscasters who will take our jobs one day, by providing them mentoring and information and advice. So we try to cover past, present, and future.”

Massey and Smothers will be joined in early June in Salisbury, NC for the three day awards weekend by national winners, Dan Patrick (Sportscaster of the year) and Peter King (Sportswriter). In addition, Dick Vitale, and Mitch Albom will be inducted into the NSSA Hall of Fame.
