Softball: Hansis, Hemingway hurl NMB, Conway to wins

nmb-hansispitchThe North Myrtle Beach High softball team got another dominating performance from pitcher Taylor Hansis on Monday to move into the driver’s seat of the district tournament.

Hansis pitched a complete-game one-hitter to shutout Darlington 3-0 as the Lady Chiefs (22-3) became the only team in the double-elimination tournament without a loss.

They will face the winner of Wednesday’s elimination game between Darlington and Hilton Head on Friday needing to win only one of two to advance to the Lower State tournament.

North Myrtle Beach’s Myatt Hardwick went 2-for-2 with two RBIs, and she broke open a scoreless game in the fourth inning by driving in a pair of runs. Kieran Lawson went 2-for-3 and Julia Cole went 1-for-3 with an insurance RBI in the sixth.

But Hansis didn’t need it as she cruised through the Lady Falcons (18-7) order with relative ease.

* Conway 10, North Augusta 3: The Lady Tigers won the rematch from last Thursday’s playoff opener against North Augusta to keep their surprisingly strong season alive.

Conway starting pitcher Neci Hemingway (10-7) had another impressive performance. The eighth-grader struck out eight batters while scattering five hits to earn the victory.

Conway was led at the plate by seniors Kady Edwards (3-for-5), Coker Edge and Madison Gore (2-for-3, a walk, and two runs scored). Eighth-grader Ashley Rowell went 2-for-3 and scored twice.

Conway advances to play Stratford on Wednesday at 6 p.m. for the district title. The Lady Tigers will have to defeat Stratford twice to reach the Lower State tournament.
* Carolina Forest 5, Dutch Fork 2: The Lady Panthers scored a pair of runs in the first two innings and got a strong outing from starting pitcher Emily Merriam to defeat the Lady Silver Foxes in an eliminaton-game rematch.

Carolina Forest’s Cheyenne MacKenna went 2-for-4 with an RBI double and Taylor Hunter went 2-for-3 to lead the Lady Panthers at the plate. They advance to face Bluffton on the road Wednesday needing to win a twinbill to reach the Lower State tournament.

* Hartsville 6, St. James 1: The Lady Red Foxes scored in each of the first four innings to deal the visiting Lady Sharks their first loss in the district tournament. They will play a team to be determined on Wednesday in an elimination game.
