Harper’s HR ignites P-Nats to comeback win over MB

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans (43-32, 3-3) surrendered four runs in the eighth inning Wednesday and dropped a 6-5 decision against the Potomac Nationals at Pfitzner Stadium.

Washington Nationals star Bryce Harper, making his second straight rehab assignment, went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in the third inning. He hit second in the order and was the designated hitter.

It was a back-and-forth game as the Pelicans overcame a 2-0 deficit to claim a 5-2 sixth-inning advantage. Potomac’s Francisco Soriano tied the game with a two-out, two-run single in the eighth inning off Joe Van Meter. Moments later, Billy Burns drilled an RBI double into the corner in left field to give the P-Nats the lead.

Van Meter (2-4) allowed the eighth inning outburst and took the loss. Richie Mirowski (6-3) worked a scoreless eighth inning and got the final three outs in the ninth to snag the win.

Trailing 2-0, the Pelicans sent eight men to the plate in a big five-run sixth-inning rally. Joe Maloney supplied the biggest knock with a bases-clearing, three-run triple. Chris Grayson added an RBI single and Drew Robinson closed the uprising with a sacrifice fly.

Grayson paced the Pelicans going 2-for-3 with a walk. Robinson doubled with one out in the eighth inning but was stranded. The Pelicans stranded runners on the corners in the seventh.

Right-hander Jerad Eickhoff started and took a no decision, allowing two earned runs on six hits with one walk and three strikeouts. He struck out Harper in the first inning.

The Pelicans wrap up a four-game series Thursday with the Potomac Nationals in Woodbridge, Va. Left-hander Victor Payano (5-4, 4.41) will be opposed by right-hander Ivan Pineyro (0-0, 9.64). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. Coverage will begin at 6:50 p.m. on AM 1050 and FM 101.9 – Fox Sports in Myrtle Beach.
