Henry helps Lady Chants net second straight OT victory

Trailing by three with 3.2 seconds remaining in regulation Angelica Henry stole a Charleston Southern inbound pass and drained a triple from the wing as time expired to push the game into overtime.

Coastal Carolina outscored Charleston Southern 15-10 in the extra session en route to a 77-72 win and their second straight overtime victory.

The victory was Coastal’s sixth in the past seven games and improves the squad to 13-13 on the season and 8-8 in Big South play. The loss knocks Charleston Southern to 8-16 (3-12 Big South) on the season. If the season were to end today, the Chanticleers and Buccaneers would meet again in the first round of the 2013 VisitMyrtleBeach.com Big South Basketball Championships.

Junior Katelyn Connor led the Chants with a career-high 22 points on 9-of-19 from the field and a perfect 4-of-4 from the free-throw line. Angelica Henry scored 18 points for the Chants despite missing much of the second half with an injury. Kayla Cook tied her career-high with 17 points while Savanah Pippin pulled down a career-high 13 boards.

Charleston Southern was paced by Lakeitha Alston’s 21-point, 13-rebound double-double. DJ Fowler also scored in double figures for the Buccaneers, while Erin Bratcher and Shay Jones each chipped in 14.

With Coastal leading 47-46 in the second half AJ Jordan, Connor and Cook combined to reel off 12 unanswered points to push the Chanticleers out to a game-high 13-point lead at 59-46 with 4:51 to play in regulation. Charleston Southern then used a trio of 3-pointers along with five free throws and a layup by Alston to regain their first lead since late in the first half at 62-59 with four seconds left on the clock.

Coastal botched the ensuing inbound pass, giving the Buccaneers the ball at their own time line with 3.2 seconds to play. The game looked to be over before Henry stole the Charleston Southern inbound pass and sank her second trey of the game, sending the game into overtime.

Connor started the extra session with a layup that was followed by a pair of free throws by Henry to take a 66-22 lead. Cook then sank a mid-range jumper after Jones missed a 3-pointer on the other end. Cook capped Coastal’s 8-0 run with a two free throws, giving the Chants a 70-62 lead with 2:46 to play in overtime.

Alston responded with a trey and Fowler scored in the lane to pull the Buccaneers within a point. Connor then bookended a Bratcher 3-pointer with a pair of layups to give Coastal a 74-72 lead. Henry and Pippin closed out the Chanticleer victory at the free-throw line to provide the 77-72 score.

Coastal opened the game hot from the field, pulling out to an 8-5 lead. Charleston Southern then countered with 16-2 run over the ensuing 5:23 to take a 21-10 lead. The Buccaneer scoring streak featured 3-pointers by Fowler, Anacia Dotson and Bratcher along with three at the charity stripe by Jones who was fouled shooting a triple.

The Chants refused to waiver and methodically put together a 21-6 run over the remainder of the half to take a 31-29 lead into the intermission. Coastal scored eight points at the line during the run and Henry connected on Coastal’s lone 3-point attempt of the stanza. Connor’s freebies with 54 seconds to play in the half tied the game at 29 before Pippin gave Coastal the lead on a baseline jumper with 16 seconds showing on the game clock.

For the game, Coastal Carolina shot 42.4 percent (28-of-66) and outscored Charleston Southern 24-12 off turnovers. The Chants also owned a 47-38 advantage on the boards. The Buccaneers shot 39.3 percent (24-of-61) from the floor for the game, including 35.7 percent (10-of-28) from deep.

Coastal Carolina takes the next week off before returning to the road for its final regular season games of the year. The Chants first travel to Liberty for a 7 p.m. tipoff on Thursday before concluding their regular season at High Point on Saturday.
