High school football season extended for second week

707The local high school football season is headed for double overtime after the SCHSL voted to extend the regular season for a second week in the wake of Hurricane Matthew.

After earlier postponing games for the arrival of the storm last Friday, the SCHSL’s Executive League committee reconvened Wednesday and voted 10-2 to push back the final week of the regular season back to Nov. 11 for schools that were adversely affected by the hurricane.

Last week’s games were moved to Nov. 4, which was originally set for the start of the playoffs. The postseason will now get under way Nov. 18 with the state championship games set for Dec. 16 and 17. Local teams are still working out the specifics of their individual scheduling issues for postponed games and will be announced in the near future.

The change will once again create a conflict with the Dec. 10 North-South All-Star Game, which will coincide with the Dec. 9 state semifinals, forcing the game to either switch dates or to take only players whose teams do not advance to the Lower and Upper State title games. Last year a heavy flood postponed the season one week and created a head-to-head conflict with the state championships.

Other fall sports affected by the storm include girls tennis and volleyball, which were extended one week, as well as the swimming state championships, now postponed by one week to the state championships onĀ  Oct. 14-15. The girls tennis and volleyball playoffs are now set to start Oct. 26-27, with the state volleyball championships moving from River Bluff to Dutch Fork High on Nov. 12. The Oct. 17 Class 4A Lower State girls golf championships is moving from Hilton Head Island to Hartsville.

In private school action, the SCISA Executive Committee is expected to announce a decision soon about postponing its fall sports season by one week.
